Geraldine 'Gerry' MacKay (1944-2026) Obituary | Celebrating Her Life & Legacy (2026)

Geraldine 'Gerry' MacKay, a beloved member of the New Glasgow community, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026, at the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit after a brief illness. Born in Amherst, Gerry was the daughter of the late Raymond and Jean (Smith) Weldon. Her journey began at the Aberdeen School of Nursing, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1964. Gerry's early career was spent at the Moncton Hospital and the Aberdeen Hospital's Maternity/Pediatric Ward, where she made a lasting impact on the lives of many.

Gerry's love for the outdoors was evident in her cherished time at the family cottage at Lochaber Lake with her husband, Tom, and the rest of her family. She was an artist at heart, with a passion for painting, tole painting, and crafting. Her talents were not limited to the arts; she was often called upon to sew for her family, offering her assistance wherever needed. Gerry's culinary skills were equally impressive, with her baking being a highlight during the holidays.

Tom and Gerry shared a unique bond, enjoying spontaneous drives with no set destination or timing. Their adventures were a testament to their love for each other and the joy they found in the little things. Gerry's devotion and love as a wife, mother, and grandmother were unparalleled, and she frequently babysat for her grandchildren, creating cherished memories.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Crocket; son, Craig; grandchildren, Laura (Seth Burrill), Jamie, Jakob, and Josh; brother-in-law, Bobby (Wendy); one niece; one nephew; and numerous cousins. Gerry was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Tom, and son-in-law, Jim.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the North Nova SPCA, Lochaber Centre, or a charity of choice. The North Nova SPCA can be supported at https://www.novascotiaspca.ca/shelters/north-nova-shelter/. The Lochaber Centre can be supported at https://www.novascotiaspca.ca/shelters/north-nova-shelter/. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Aberdeen Hospital for their compassionate care during Gerry's stay.

Gerry's life will be remembered for her kindness, creativity, and unwavering love for her family. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but her legacy will live on through the memories of those she touched and the lives she impacted.
