A shocking case of domestic violence has left a woman paralyzed, and the perpetrator, Robert Easom, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison. The story highlights the devastating consequences of coercive and controlling behavior, as well as the importance of recognizing and addressing such patterns in relationships.
Easom, 57, was found guilty of wounding with intent after a trial at Preston Crown Court. He had previously admitted to engaging in coercive and controlling behavior between 2017 and 2025, as well as two charges of actual bodily harm. The evidence presented by Lancashire Police revealed a pattern of abuse, including physical assault and verbal abuse, that lasted for years.
On February 17, 2025, when Ms. Trudi Burgess, Easom's partner, informed him of her intention to leave the relationship, he responded with a brutal assault. This assault resulted in a severed spinal cord and left Ms. Burgess paralyzed. The abuse was documented by Ms. Burgess, who now requires specialized care, in the notes section of her phone. The police described a cycle of verbal and physical abuse, followed by apologetic and affectionate behavior, which Easom subjected her to.
One incident in 2019 involved Easom dragging Ms. Burgess upstairs by the head, banging her against each step. In 2021, he placed a sheet over her head and strangled her, leaving her terrified for her life. The next day, he claimed he was 'just trying to teach her a lesson.'
Judge Robert Altham, in his sentencing remarks, emphasized the severity of Easom's actions, stating that no sentence could adequately compensate for the harm caused. He acknowledged the long-term impact on Ms. Burgess's life and the need to protect the public from further harm. Easom was sentenced to 16 years in prison, followed by a four-year extended license period, for wounding with intent, two charges of actual bodily harm, and coercive and controlling behavior.
Ms. Burgess, in a statement read by her brother Charlie, expressed her determination to move forward with purpose and strength. She emphasized that the abuse has left her with life-changing injuries, bringing challenges and a constant learning process. Despite the pain and injuries, she finds solace in the love she has in her life, which she believes is far greater than any physical harm.
Ms. Burgess' family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for her round-the-clock care. The page can be accessed at https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-us-care-for-our-mum-trudi. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of recognizing and addressing domestic violence, and the need for support systems to help survivors rebuild their lives.
