The Texas Rangers continued their strategic moves in building a strong starting rotation, adding veteran right-hander Cal Quantrill to their minor league system. With the recent introduction of MacKenzie Gore on Thursday, the team's focus shifted to bolstering their depth options.
According to sources familiar with the negotiations, the Rangers agreed to a minor league deal with Quantrill, allowing him to join the big league camp. This move comes as a strategic addition to the team's starting rotation, with Quantrill bringing valuable experience and a proven track record.
Quantrill, turning 31 on February 10, has spent the majority of the last seven years as a starter in the majors, pitching for San Diego, Cleveland, Miami, and Atlanta. Despite a less-than-stellar 2025 season with Miami and Atlanta, where he posted a 4-12 record and a 6.04 ERA in 26 starts, Quantrill demonstrated his potential in 2022 with Cleveland, earning 15 wins.
In the final month of the 2025 season, Quantrill showcased his skills in the Rangers' system, pitching two starts over 11 innings and boasting an impressive 1.64 ERA in Triple-A Round Rock.
This addition to the team's depth options includes fellow veteran Austin Gombert, who will also be in camp on a minor league deal. With Quantrill's arrival, the Rangers' starting rotation gains a seasoned arm, providing a strong foundation for the upcoming season.
The Rangers' strategic moves, including the addition of Gore and Quantrill, are aimed at strengthening their position in the highly competitive American League West Division. With a focus on building a championship-caliber rotation, the team is poised to make a significant impact in the 2026 season.
