Brian Cashman's Perspective on the Yankees' Qualifying Offer to Trent Grisham
Brian Cashman, the Yankees' General Manager, recently expressed his belief that the team secured a valuable deal by extending a qualifying offer to Trent Grisham. This perspective comes in light of Grisham's decision to accept the offer, despite the potential for a more lucrative multiyear contract on the open market.
When Grisham accepted the qualifying offer in November, the $22.025 million seemed steep for the Yankees. However, Cashman now views it as a bargain, given the current state of the free agent market. He stated on MLB Network Radio, "At this point, that $22 million looks like a bargain the way the free agent market got away from everyone, on a one-year basis."
Grisham's performance in 2025, his final year of arbitration, was exceptional. He hit 34 home runs with a .811 OPS and became the Yankees' regular leadoff hitter, earning $5.25 million. This breakout season made him a key player for the team.
The qualifying offer provided the Yankees with insurance as they aimed to re-sign Cody Bellinger, who they eventually signed to a five-year, $162.5 million contract. Grisham, along with Bellinger and Kyle Tucker, formed a strong outfield core. Cashman emphasized, "What he did last year to unlock and take it to another level was spectacular... all the information that we buy into leads us to believe clearly that by offering him the qualifying offer, it is real, it is sustainable, and he is an offensive and defensive player for us moving forward."
The Yankees' luxury tax payroll has increased to $335.5 million, partly due to Grisham's high average annual value. However, his $22.025 million contract is tied for the seventh-highest AAV among position players signed this offseason, trailing only Tucker, Bichette, Bregman, Bellinger, Alonso, and Schwarber.
Despite the high payroll, Cashman's confidence in Grisham's potential for future success remains strong. The Yankees are now set to retain their starting outfield of Bellinger, Grisham, and Aaron Judge, with Jasson Domínguez as the fourth outfielder. Cashman's perspective highlights the strategic value of qualifying offers in building a competitive team.
